De Smet is a center of heritages, recreation, industry, and trade. Six of author Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books are set in and around De Smet. They include:
We are near the birthplace of Harvey Dunn, a famous prairie painter. Thousands come each year, from all over the world, to visit our "Little Town on the Prairie".
De Smet became the seat of Kingsbury county in 1880. The Population is approximately 1300. De Smet is located 90 miles northwest of Sioux Falls, SD. It is served by east-west U.S. Highway 14 and north-south Highway 25.
Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society
The Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Ingalls-Wilder sites and the hosting of Laura's readers. The Society welcomes you to visit the two original homes of the Ingalls family.
